low testosterone increased dementiaTestosterone, a male sex hormone, is an essential component in maintaining the health of different body systems in males. Testosterone improves your overall health and decreases your risk of cardiovascular disease. However, problems arise when testosterone levels are not properly maintained.

Hormone levels are of grave significance. Any alterations in hormones causing a spike or drop in hormone levels can have adverse effects on your overall health. Hormone levels including testosterone levels tend to vary with age. As men age, their testosterone levels tend to plummet downhill. This is when you should really pay close attention to your testosterone level.

Are you a male over 65 years old? Have you been experiencing a lack of sex drive? Are you beginning to experience increased weight primarily around your midsection? If you answered yes to any of these questions you should call your primary physician and immediately set up an appointment to check your hormone levels.

There are various signs and symptoms which help to alert your body that you may be experiencing decreased testosterone levels. Low testosterone levels are associated with decreased muscle mass, increased weight gain, lack of sex drive, loss of concentration, an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, as well as a greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Recent studies have shown that low levels of both total and bioavailable testosterone may be associated with an increased risk of dementia in older men. A study comprised of 3,650 men who were at least 65 years of age was conducted to demonstrate the direct link which exist between decreased testosterone levels and increased dementia.

Total testosterone was responsible for increasing the risk of dementia in elderly men by 2.3 times in the upper percentile and 1.9 times among participants in the lower percentile. These studies also revealed that low levels of bioavailable testosterone correlates to a greater chance of men 80 years of age and older developing dementia. The likelihood that men aged 80 and older will develop dementia showed a significant threefold increase while there was a 7% nonsignificant increase risk of men under the age of 80 developing dementia.

Results obtained through this study reveal that low testosterone levels and concentrations are associated with brain aging, which can eventually cause dementia.

Since hormone levels are very important in improving your health, it is vital that you’re aware of your testosterone level as you age. Total testosterone and bioavailable testosterone has served as a major predictor in dementia. The lower your testosterone levels are the greater your risk of developing dementia. Even a gradual decline in testosterone can negatively impact your health. It is therefore essential that you take the necessary steps to properly maintain your testosterone levels in order to decrease your risk of dementia in the future.
